More people have died in mental institutions in this country in the last 100 years than died in all of the wars of the last 100 years.

Psychiatry is opinion, not at all science.

It is based in ego and manipulation.

          Pharmacology kills

          Automobiles kill

          Religion kills

If the criterion is the potential for abuse then the list of lethal things becomes endless.

I think its the actual abuse ( not the potential ) that is being addressed here.
Psychiatry never really helps any one, except the fakes using it to get paid.

I would have to agree with this. There have been studies that have concluded that anti-depressants have no measurable difference or effect than placebos.

I have read in Sciencedaily how even an hour of moderate exercise each day has a demonstrably superior effect on depression than any drugs, of course the problem with exercise is it's free so the drug industry stomped all over that study.

There's that deal where a pliant shrink will prescribe speed, goofballs, downers, and hallucinogenics for you, though.

                  Surely that redeems the enterprise....?

                  Inside ref to iBarb:

A certain friend of ours had what I think was a dramatic and severe turn for the worse after his visit to the shrink. He denied it with all his might, and insisted the prescription was doing him a great deal of good, yet within *minutes* he'd quit school and retreated into WoW. Somewhat later he "lost" his job, due to no-call-no-show for *two weeks*.

Anecdotal I know, but pertinent nonetheless.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

People should read about Sigmund Frued's daughter, who took over as the cheerleader for psychoanalysis after he died. In any modern setting, she'd have been sued for malpractice and possibly wound up in jail.

As to the ref: Amazing how he'd listen to the advice of a total stranger, but the collective and unanimous advice of everybody he knew (a veritable high-IQ think tank) meant nothing.

            Pacificism (i.e., doing nothing) kills.

Irresponsible greed and ignorance seems much more dangerous to me... psychiatry, coupled with an ongoing *proper* monitoring of meds (by not only the psychiatrist, but a person's friends and family as well), a person's quest towards self-actualization, and cognitive therapy does more good than harm in my opinion.

I think anyone's asking for trouble if they depend strictly on medication and aren't working towards something outside of just taking pills.
